The forecast says clear. You have been in the Skyview Suite since the afternoon, the sauna is still warm, and the sky over Kaunispää has turned the hard, dark blue it takes on before the lights come. The bed faces the glass wall, so the waiting happens lying down.
Ivalo airport is about half an hour away by road, and that is the reason to have a car: the best aurora spots around Saariselkä are off the bus routes, and a heated car with the engine running is the warmest hide there is. The private photography night is the one thing to book before you fly; the guide picks the direction that afternoon from the cloud map.
Five minutes from Santa Claus Village, and once the last elf has gone home the forest around the Arctic TreeHouse falls silent. The suite's glass wall faces north; the hot tub is on the terrace outside it. Children asleep in the room, parents on the terrace: this is the Rovaniemi week that works.
Rovaniemi airport is a few minutes' drive, so a car turns the region into day trips: the ski hill at Ounasvaara, the river, the zoo at Ranua an hour to the south. For the one evening that has to be perfect, a private chef cooks an Arctic tasting menu in the suite.
In June the sun does not set at Kakslauttanen, and the kelo-pine villa with the glass bedroom is a different house: the roof that frames auroras in winter now frames a sky that is still light at two in the morning. Urho Kekkonen National Park is a short drive away.
Lake Inari is an hour north by car, and the private boat cruise with a campfire is the evening to book: it is Finland's third-largest lake, and most of its shore has no road. Back at the villa, the sauna and the hot tub work exactly as they do in February.
